May 25th, or Memorial Day, is a day to honor those who died while serving in the United States armed forces. The seeds for Memorial Day were sown in May, 1868 when the head of the Grand Army of the Republic established Decoration Day as a day to decorate the graves of the soldiers with flowers. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson, along with Congress, declared Waterloo, New York the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Eventually, many state legislatures passed proclamations which designated May 30 as Memorial Day.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to take place on the last Monday in May and to honor anyone who has died in an American war. Today, people pay tribute on Memorial Day by marking graves at national cemeteries with flags, wearing poppies made by disabled and needy veterans to honor the deceased, and attending parades to honor those who served.
Memorial Day has also become the informal start of the summer vacation season. It's customary to celebrate the entire holiday weekend with family and friends. If you want to have the best holiday weekend this Memorial Day, be sure to follow these tips:
1. Enjoy the weather
There’s no better way to get ready for the summer season than by spending plenty of time outdoors. Enjoy the weather before it gets too hot, breathe in the fresh air, and take note of the changes to your natural surroundings. Take part in a Memorial Day parade, or grab a spot on the side of the road and watch the festivities march by.
2. Be close to friends and family
As Memorial Day is a time to remember those we’ve lost, it’s also a time to be thankful for the important people in our lives today. Make it a point to spend time relaxing with your friends and family and enjoying each other’s company. Invite the gang over for a cook-out, take in a round of golf, or meet up with friends here at Lady Luck Casino® Marquette
